I am located in the Sierra Foothills of northern California. I enjoy hiking, traveling, road trips and nature. I am now retired from Pacific Telephone/SBC/Pacific Bell/AT&T, where I worked for over 39 years and now enjoying my retirement.
I am a ham radio operator and enjoy working on computers. I am new to RUclips and just giving it a try. My videos aren't that clear because I have an analog camcorder and have to digitize my videos before I can edit them. I hope to get a digital camcorder soon.
Update: I now have a few HD security cams that occasionally record animals around the yard. If I notice something interesting, I can zoom in on it with the 12X zoom on the PTZ cam.
I am also new to drone flying and enjoy flying my DJI Min2 drone. I hope you enjoy my videos and Like and subscribe to my channel. Thank you

Waypoint Mission Fail
This is the trouble with doing waypoint missions in the mountains. You need to be sure and set all waypoints high enough. I tried to manually raise the drone higher, but it was locked onto the programmed altitude. Fortunately, the 360° obstacle avoidance saved the drone from hitting those trees!

First Active Track & RTH With New Drone, Hope
Просмотров 19221 день назад
First test of Active Track with Hope, my new DJI Mini 4 Pro, then RTH test under the trees. She didn't do too badly until she landed on the roof! I did another simple RTH test after that, and she landed right on the landing pad like she's supposed to. I kept getting interrupted by my neighbor, asking questions about the drone and our new roof. He's a retired roofer and really impressed with the...

Low & Slow Drone Flight Through the Woods
Omg 😱Not track By sensor
Oppa 😊😊😊The drone deliberately avoided
Stunning as always Gary, lovely flight and footage! Thanks for sharing buddy! 👌👍
Thank you very much!
Good video. How did you get the crosshair on the controller screen? Or is that now standard with a recent update? BTW: the sudden loudness of the Yakety Sax track nearly knocked me out of my chair!
Hahaha, thanks, didn't mean to scare you. To get the crosshairs on the screen, in the drone camera view mode, tap the 3 dots at the upper right, then tap on the camera tab, then go down to "Gridlines", and the far right, with the rectangle with the dot in the center, is the crosshairs. That way, you know exactly where the drone is headed. Works well for aiming between 2 objects to fly between. It also works great for finding the exact height of objects, like a tree, building, tower, etc, but only if you have the gimbal centered on 0°.
@@gama45 Many thanks!
@@leedonehower3112 You're welcome!
Mini 4 pro?
Yes
Fly the Cfly Faith Mini 2, It will perform better waypoint then this 😀👍
Yes sr, I have friends up the G, V, beautiful, but G, you only get a couple care fresh from dji, you about to use it again, NICE,
Yes, beautiful around here, but yes, I need to be more careful!. I have a 2-year plan with 4 replacements, but I still don't want to use them up. I still have my Mini 2, but no OA on that one. I've only used one replacement on that one too.
It sure does seem like the mini pro 4 is the perfect drone for navigating through and around those tall trees. Keep up the good work! Enjoy your videos.
Thanks John, yes, it is a great drone! Glad you are enjoying my videos. I'm having fun making them too, but kinda scary at times! 😱😅
Thanks for sharing Gary. I also failed trying to plan a waypoint flight circling my house through my yards at about 4-8’ but any obstacle avoidance warning aborts the flight. I haven’t tried to plan the waypoint flight turning off obstacle avoidance. It may not allow waypoint flights without using obstacle avoidance. I don’t think I would risk it anyway. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. 👍🏻😎
Thanks for your comment, Ken. Good question about if you can do a waypoint mission with OA turned off, but I wouldn't want to try it either, especially in the mountains! That OA saved my drone! I checked the elevation of those water tanks on Google Earth, and they are about 200 feet higher than my deck. But I forgot to allow for the trees which are about 200 feet taller! 😬
😬😅👍🐈⬛🐾👏
Thanks Chris 😱😅
Dang it man those trees were close! Lol.
Yeah, I nearly had to change my britches! 😱 I guess the mountains aren't a good place to try your first waypoint mission. I checked the elevation of those tanks on Google Earth, but I neglected to allow for the 200 foot tall trees behind them! Fortunately, the OA kicked in and save hope.
@@gama45lol. Did you make that mission up on the controller before launching Hope?
@@WeretheRoberts Yes, sitting in my recliner. lol
@@gama45 smart man. Hahaha
Wow.. That's amazingly impressive! Thank you for sharing!
Yes, it certainly is. Thank you for commenting 😊
Yump'n - Yi-many! You ain't afraid lol
Hahaha, that's what you think, Randy! That scared the crap outa me! I tried to go higher, but the elevation was locked in on a Waypoint mission. Fortunately, the obstacle avoidance kicked in and halted the mission before it hit any trees! Gulp! 😱 I guess the mountains ain't a good place to try your first waypoint mission. 😅
Good flight Gary! Watch that altitude don't want you to hit a plane!😅
Thanks Jamie, but I don't think it's planes I need to worry about, Some of these trees are around 200 feet tall, and we can legally fly up to 400 feet above them, and the trees next to the water tanks are more than 400 feet higher than me! 😅
Pretty sick good one, my nerves can't handle trying that
Hahaha, sure you can. Just have faith in that 360° obstacle avoidance. 😊
Is this the Mini 4 pro? What is P mode?
Yes, P mode is misspelled Normal mode. Hopefully, they will fix that soon.
@@gama45 huh, I own and fly this drone and I have not noticed that, is it very recent, as I’ve been flying fpv and not the mini
@@engineer1178 Yes, this changed in the latest RC2 Controller firmware and upgrade to DJI Fly 1.13.0. The N was changed to P by mistake. The next update should fix that.
Great, so I'll Test IT too
Yeah, it works best if you have a lot of tree cover so it can't see the sky, and it stays down low. I noticed it tries to follow the same route back home, so the more zigzagged, the better. Good luck!
Very good demonstration. Liked. All the best
Thanks, glad you liked it.
It has eroded a lot, I used to live Grass Valley.
Yes, it sure has. We've been here since 1972. Such a shame to see it deteriorate like that. 😢
Hope did well Gary, many thanks for sharing
Yes, she did. Thanks for the comment, Shaun.
Best test! Mini4 looks perfect
Thanks Fery. Yes, she did a nice long low path that time.
Hey she found the pad! Lol well you may hav helped a little bit.
Hahaha, yeah, I had to nudge her a little. She did much better at the Bear River. ruclips.net/video/1XD8agAB4m8/видео.html
That return home flight was wild! How come these mini 4 drones are so attracted to the roof? Is there something in the water over there Gary? Hahaha.
Hahaha, I don't know why they are so attracted to my new roof! I guess the roof has a magnetic personality. 😂 But did you notice she tries to follow the same route back, until she gets sidetracked by our beautiful new roof? 🤣
Made it!!! 👏👏👏well done! 🐾🐈⬛👍
Thanks Chris! Yeah, first time with my new M4P. I tried to find a spot with lots of overhead trees so she would stay low.
Great test!!!!! 👏👏👏👏
@@chriscapune7873 Thanks!
The video looks very nice, but it's a shame about the bump. It seems like the obstacle detection system mistook a branch in the foreground for a tree in the background at a greater distance. The system works well, but it's not perfect in very challenging situations.
Thanks Sergio! Yes, the drone has a little trouble detecting those tiny branches and wires, but it does great at avoiding them when on RTH. It has amazed me how it has managed to maneuver to get out of some of those situations.
Bypass or Brake mode?
Bypass. That's why she kept going around those trees. But she was way off on the precision landing. The landing pad was probably too close to the roof.
Bypass😊
Anyone saw the crash at 0:23? BTW is the Bypass or Brake mode?
Yeah, that was a close one at 0:23! Those darned little branches! Bypass mode. That's why she was going around those trees.
What a beautiful lake. Great flying!
Thanks Rick!
Another beautiful flight video. Just wondering, how did the signal strength hold up with all the trees surrounding you? Thanks for sharing.👍🏻😎
Thanks Ken! Not just the trees, but I was also about 100' below the dam. I made it out to 3973' before I lost the first bar, 4405' before losing the second, and 6887' before reaching signal loss and going into auto RTH. I should have gone up another 100', but I forgot to raise the max altitude, and it was locked at 393'. BTW, I don't like it when the altitude turns red when reaching max altitude because it's very hard to read, not enough contrast.
Love this!!!!
Thank you, I’m glad you like it!
Beautiful!!! Are there fish in there? 😃👏👍🐈⬛🐾
Thanks Chris! Yes, there are fish in there. 😊
I’m so impressed with the O4 transmission on the mini 4pro. Over a mile with you down in the trees. Well done DJI! Great video Gary!
Thanks John! Yes, I'm very impressed with it too. It's so much better than my Mini 2.
Good morning, great video 👏👏👏🇧🇷 until the next episode 🏆🚀😃
Thank you very much, Paulo! 😊
Cat automatically tries to look bigger than the deer
Hahaha, oh, is that why they hunch their back when they get scared, to look bigger? I never thought of that.
Beauttiful video 👍
Thank you very much!
Great flying and videos. What was your max distance? I kept thinking you would rapidly start to lose signal due to the dam and foliage while flying over the lake. Did you try any color correction in editing to deal with the huge light contrasts?
Thanks Mike! Max distance was 6113 ft when I lost video just as I reached the peninsula, then it did an RTH. I was going to do a little color correction, but I forgot to do that before saving and uploading to RUclips. I also forgot to set the white balance on manual, as the color of the sky kept changing, and I forgot to change the resolution to 4K. I also forgot to set the max altitude higher than 393 ft, as the dam was almost 200 ft higher than the bridge. I don't like the way the altitude turns red, as I can't read it on the screen in the bright sunlight. Not enough contrast. So many things to remember, and I was tired. But I do love that cruise control.
@@gama45 Gary, thanks for your detailed response. It sounds like you experience many of the same issues I have on my flights where I attempt to capture "cinematic" footage. I agree, "so many things to remember." I have mixed feelings about using manual on the white balance for the same reasons you do; it may be better to keep it on auto when the sky is changing. I use an inexpensive screen cover from Amz that helps with the sulight/screen issue, but makes it more difficult to manipulate the gimbals. I also upload videos to RUclips too rapidly instead of giving myself more time to think about the necessary edits. I have to remind myself that the deadlines are imaginary. I will have to try to cruise control, but I worry that it is one more thing that may get me in trouble when there are so many other things to attend to. Sorry for long my long reply; nice to exchange ideas with fellow drone flyer.
Amazing Gary as always! Fantastic bridge with stunning views! 👍
Thanks!
4:43 i thought you would go straight and keep flying low to explore the street 😅
I thought about it, but John @123liftoff asked me to show more of the old & new bridge, so I turned around and went back over the bridge. 😅
Wonderful video, Gary! Love your flight paths. Beautiful day on the Bear.
Thanks Jamie! I was on cruise control going across the lake. Could you tell? That's right, the Mini 4 Pro has cruise control. You move the sticks where you want them and hit a button on the bottom of the controller and let go of the sticks. It will keep flying in that direction until you hit the button again, or move the right stick to turn off cruise control. You can still control the gimbal and yaw, but it will keep flying straight as an arrow at the constant speed. I have trouble keeping the right stick centered, and it drifts to the side, as it did on the bridge, so that cruise control helps a bunch.
I am so jealous that you have so much scenery and open skies to work with! Gorgeous video, though I do wish you'd get more storage so you can shoot in 4k. My area is saturated with air and city restrictions and I've yet to find a nearby open field where I can fly legally. I recently went to a spot outside Castro Valley near a reservoir where the space wasn't within the East Bay Parks system where drones are prohibited only to be chased out by EBMUD who owned the forested land next to the reservoir.
Well, come on up to Nevada City and you can fly over our beautiful scenery. My wife & I grew up in southern California, and we came up here to see her dad & step-mom on our first Christmas in 1966. We fell in love with the area, and I was fortunate enough to get a transfer with the phone company to Yuba City in 1972, then to Auburn, and finally to Grass Valley. I retired here in 2006 and enjoying my retirement years here in God's country.

Flew my Mini Pro 4 inside as well, but without the prop guards made my arse pucker. I got an Avata 2, and made this one. ruclips.net/video/wddg8XpYLEo/видео.html I crashed a ton of times, but finally got a good run. A ton easier. And thank God for DJI Refresh. Lol.
Very nice tour of your apartment, Mike!
@@gama45 Thanks, Gana45. I did like you with my Mini Pro 4 and was tempted as heck to try and fly a run though here, but didn't have the nerve till I got the Avata 2. Lol. Have a good one and happy flying!
I would love to have an Avata 2, but retired and living on a small retirement. Maybe for next Christmas. Ya separate the men from the boys by the price of their toys. Haha 😉😄
@@gama45 Getting close to retiring over here as well , and looking forward to it. And I hear you. These things aren't cheap. Only dropped the money on this one because in an Uber an Amazon truck almost crushed us. Not hurt at all, and an easy 2500 I talked the insurance adjuster out of to keep me from getting an attorney. Bought it soon after. Great little drone.
@@jwd70 Yeah, I got my first drone, a DJI Mavic Mini with my Stimulus check from President Trump in May 2020. Then, in December 2020, after crashing it too many times, I sent it back to DJI and upgraded to a Mini 2. Then my wife got me this Mini 4 Pro for my birthday last December.
👍👍 Now that's a very nice cinematic flight Gary! What happened to that small marina in the reservoir? Is it just old age or did something catastrophic cause the damage?
Thanks Jimbo! No, it just hasn't opened for the season yet. Probably around Memorial Day. I don't know what happened to that one boat dock though. Maybe tidal wave? 🤣 Oh, I guess it's built that way, maybe to access both sides of the boat?
Very Nice Gary!
Thanks Rick!
Nice. Thanks. Do you see power lines as you approach?
